James May's Toy Stories - Lego House

Roller Coasters

Our family has been blessed to be a part of a review team for Download N Go unit studies. I will be using these with Lil Man and Lil Red this year just as I would if I had bought them. I am also giving away one copy of this unit so read all the way to the end to find out how to get your name into the drawing.

Our first unit was Roller Coasters and we had a great time learning things like history, inventors, physics and safety.

The unit came as a download so we were able to print off the pages we wanted and leave the others alone. This is a big plus for me as I am always looking for a way to save a few pennies.

Our objectives for this unit were as follows:
Day 1. What is a Roller Coaster?
Day 2. The History of Roller Coasters
Day 3. People and Places of Roller Coasters
Day 4. Science Secrets of Roller Coasters and Rides
Day 5. Goodies and Gadgets of Roller Coasters

Each unit includes an extensive list of suggested books and videos that you can request from your library as well as instructions on how to assemble the mini-books into the folder to make the finished product. The units also include links each day to videos, maps, definitions, charts and other information that helps the student complete their daily work. I especially like the impeded links because it saved me a lot of time and I didn't have to search for good information all on my own.

My two students (1st & 2nd) that used the study really enjoyed the puzzles, word searches and others activities that got them involved. One thing my family didn't take advantage of was the suggested activities at the end of each day. These really gives the students more hands-on experience but we plan to do that with our next study.

I have shared some pictures of Lil Man and Lil Red working on their units and the completed lapbooks. This time we just used pocket folders to hold their work. At the end, we selected the pages they wanted to keep, finished assembling the mini-books and then attached it all in the pocket folders.

Here are the finished lapbooks (pictures courtesy of my 7th grader).

As I said before, I have been given one copy of Roller Coasters to give away to another deserving family. You can get one entry in the drawing by leaving me a comment on this blog. If you link this post on your own personal blog and let me know, you can get another entry. Also, if you post on Facebook, Tweet or any message board, please let me know and I will put your name in again. I will let my two year old draw the name on August 27th so I must have all comments/entries in by midnight on August 26th. Good luck!

17 years

JB and I have been married 17 years. I can not say that it has all been wedded bliss but I would marry him all over again if given the choice. We were blessed to have another wonderful Christian couple join us for dinner on our anniversary. We could not have asked for better company.

I look back at my life before I met JB and nothing I had planned is the way God intended. I was going to get through college and then get a job and then start to think about my future as a wife and mom. God directed our paths toward each other at the start of our Sophomore year. We got engaged in January and were married 7 months later, not quite a year after we met.

I am excited to see what God has in store for us in the next 17 years.

1st Day of School 2010-2011

Lil Man and Lil Red started their new school year on August 5th. Legs was gone to my parents for the week and will join them later. Lil Man is sporting his new glasses and three missing teeth in his picture. We will be using a variety of things this year and I will periodically be reviewing them here on my blog.

Open Season...Football Season, That Is

Lil Man has started his second year of tackle football already. They have had to endure some pretty intense heat but the coaches are doing a great job of making sure the boys get frequent breaks and we spray them down with water when needed.

This year Lil Man is playing for his baseball/basketball coach in the Skiatook League which is a part of the Indians Nations Football Conference.

Miss Claus

We picked up Lil Red's new kitty. Her former family needed to find Miss Claus a new home due to some personal reasons and we were ready to have a cat in our home. She is three years old and just perfect. It took Miss Claus a couple of days to warm up to our family but now she has made herself at home. She jumped up on the table the other night and tried to eat ice cream out of the same bowl while Chubbles was eating. Chubbles was hollering, "No, cat!"

Parties, Parties and More Parties

My friend Christy over at Momof2girlygirlz helped me figure out how to post slideshows. Thank you so much. I like this much better than the still pictures when sharing the fun my family is having.

Lil Man finished his golf camp on the first day of August.

JB's dad bought our whole family season tickets to Frontier City. The second of July was the first chance we got to go this season. I expected it to be crowded and hot since it was a holiday weekend but nothing could be further from the truth. It was muggy but not unbearable if you were in the shade or a breeze blew through. The only lines we had to stand in were for roller coasters and not for very long.

We got to spend precious time with family at JB's sister's house on Independence Day. This is the first time I have ever let my kids light or hold a firework. I know what you must be thinking but I grew up in a city where it was illegal to possess fireworks and all I ever heard was the dangers of fireworks from my parents and grandparents. I was very nervous all evening but the kids had a great time and I think we might have a new pyrotechnic in Legs. JB and our cousin, S are already planning for bigger and better next year.

">

On the 10th, the girls and I went to the wedding of A & B. A was Legs' first USA Gymnastics coach and has been a real encourager ever since. This couple spent most of the last fours apart while in school. They weathered the "storms" that long distance relationships can cause and what a blessing to God their wedding and marriage are.

">

During the week of the 12-16th, our church had their Vacation Bible School. Lil Man chose to go spend his week with my parents at the same time so it was just the girls and I. This Lil Red's first experience with the huge crowd but the rest of were in the preschool. Chubbles had two great teachers that really made a point to direct each activity to the daily story. Legs and I assisted the Resource Coordinator and had many odd jobs to do. We took care to clean and sanitize toys as they were returned as well as sort out lots of things that had not been touched in awhile like the stickers, colored sand, foam pieces, stamps, etc.

">

We had a baseball party to celebrate the end of the season. The sweet "D" couple here in our town allowed us to use their pool for our party.

">

Lil Red turned six years old on the 22nd. We spent the day out in the son playing with shaving cream and playing on our homemade slip n' slide. Her choice for a birthday dinner was Cracker Barrel. She got two new Webkinz, a princess book and a bag of kitty litter. She will be getting her new cat, Claws, later this month so I decided to put the litter in her gift as a way to let her know about the cat.

">

Two days later Lil Red had her party with her friends at Classroom Corner in Owasso. It was a Fancy Nancy Spa Party. The girls got pedicures including scrubs and nail polish. They made a cute tote bag craft and also played a Fancy Nancy game. Ms. Shelly and her crew did an amazing job on the party and I highly recommend them to anyone that asks.

">

We finished off the month with a family swimming party for Lil Man and Lil Red. When I decided to start having a family combo birthday party for the both of them, it became so much easier and less stressful. Again, the "D" family let us use their pool for our party. It was a small gathering but none the less, the kids had a great time. This was also the first time I had bought a decorated cookie instead of a cake but it was quite yummy.
